Bermuda foundation cited as funder of US ‘left’

Bermuda-based Atlantic Philanthropies, one of the world’s largest charitable foundations, has been cited by a leading political blogger as one of the “key” funders of the institutional left in the US.Ben Smith, who writes a blog on the website www.politico.com, said Atlantic, founded by Duty Free Shops owner Churck Feeney, was able to fund lobbying organisations known as 501(c)4s (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code which gives them tax free status) when US based family foundations cannot because of a quirk in US tax law.Mr Smith said an article by Atlantic Philanthropies officials Vivien Labaton and Gara Lamarche in US magazine American Prospect points to the direction “some serious money will be flowing”.The article, which notes growing disenchantment on the left with US President Barack Obama, says more efforts needs to be devoted to social justice movements, and less to legislative and electoral campaigns.
