‘An opportunity for us to show our culture and what being Portuguese is all about’
Music and dance filled Victoria Park this weekend as scores of people turned out to experience a taste of Portugal. The Vasco Da Gama Club celebrated a Portuguese national holiday, known as Dia de Portugal, with cooking demonstrations, embroidery, music and dancing. There were talks on historical aspects of Portuguese culture, genealogy and spirituality and guest speakers included: former MP Clarence Terceira and veteran concert promoter Eddie DeMello.Organised in collaboration with the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, the event also featured performances by singer, Stephanie Pacheco and the Portuguese Folkloric Dancers.According to club president Paul Fortuna the event went “extremely well”. He said: “It was a pretty good opportunity for us to show our culture and what being Portuguese is all about, particularly with the folklore dancers and we had a portuguese language teacher doing classes there as well.“I think the lectures went extremely well; a lot of information was disseminated. Over all it was a pretty good turn out, good music etc and I think people are looking forward to there being something similar next year.”Money raised at the event will go towards the Portuguese School of Bermuda.
