Ianthia Butler to head Road Safety Council

New chairperson of the Road Safety Council Ianthia Butler is encouraging the public to take heed on the Island’s roads during the hectic summer holiday period.Speaking moments after being announced the new chair, Ms Butler said the council would continue to run public service messages highlighting issues like speeding and drink driving.“As we gear up for the summer and all the activities such as Cup Match, Non Mariner’s etc we at the BRSC ask that you remember that all you need to do to change the chaos on our roads is simply to control you. We will have public service messages running to highlight the following topics: speed, drinking and driving and seat belts ... We look forward to working with this dynamic team to enhance the safety for all on our roads.”As a member of the Treatment of Offenders Board for more than a decade, Ms Butler will now lead the council in its mission to encourage more respectful and responsible driving on the Island’s roads.Ms Butler will take over from new National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief. Mr Perinchief was announced as the Road Safety Council Chairman at the beginning of the year before taking on the role of Government Minister.Her arrival has been given the seal of approval by Transport Minister Terry Lister, who said: “I am very pleased that Ms Butler is willing to stand as chair of this important body.“She has many years of experience of serving the country in various capacities. I am looking to her to provide leadership to the Road Safety Council as they consider the situation of drunk driving on our roads as well as speeding on the roads.“The Road Safety Council is vital to the health of the roads and continues to offer solid advice to the Minister.”At a press conference yesterday, Ms Butler admitted: “I have never been a person who seeks the spotlight or even desires it.“My focus will be to drive down the message that road safety is a community concern and requires community effort.”She added: “You have heard us say: “don’t drink and drive”, “slow down”, “fasten your helmet correctly”, and “don’t drive while talking on your cell phone.“Yes these messages are important we also want to encourage the individual responsibility of each driver/rider.
