Anti-Filipino graffiti appears in Hamilton

Filipino graffiti has now been found in Hamilton.

Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling is “very disturbed” about anti-Filipino graffiti found at sites around the Island, including within the city boundaries. He said City of Hamilton staff would be working to take care of the crude message “as quickly as we can” and urged members of the public to report such instances of vandalism at the earliest opportunity.Yesterday The Royal Gazette revealed several areas in Paget had messages including ‘Get out Filipino’ scrawled across walls in permanent marker. The discriminatory messages were found at the S Hill BELCO substation, bus stop near Modern Mart grocery store and various other spots along the nearby railway trail.A member of the public wrote in yesterday to say he found similar messages, like: “Indies and Filipinos get out” and ‘No cheap labour”, marked on the wooden benches in Victoria Park. The citizen reported it to the Corporation of Hamilton Parks Superintendent.Last night Mr Gosling said: “I really think that it’s a national issue. Obviously as a citizen of the Island I am very disturbed.“This shouldn’t be happening. I think rather than being a City issue this really is something that has to be dealt with on a national level.”He said the City of Hamilton was “fully supportive” of any initiatives Government put forward to address the growing concern.“Anything like that even the writing of graffiti doesn’t belong on a public wall or on the street or wherever. That should be reported.“Even though we have over 100 employees in the City we can’t be everywhere in the City at one time, so we really would like instances like that to be reported to us so we can take care of it as quickly as we can.”Mr Gosling said “any right thinking person would worry about there being such feelings within the community”.He said graffiti was considered a violent act, even if it normally involved defacing property. The concern would be of the crime escalating and the “violence showing itself in terms of more physical means”.Edward Benevides, Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to the City of Hamilton, said: “Whenever there are incidents of graffiti found anywhere in the City it is cleaned up as quickly as possible.“In the past, we have found graffiti in places like Victoria Park, Par-la-Ville Park and Bulls Head Car Park.”One reader wrote on The Royal Gazette’s website the graffiti was ‘disgusting’.“I’ve seen anti-Filipino graffiti in town, as well. It was on the wall in the alley that runs between Church St. and Reid St. by the Junior Library.”Someone else said they had seen swastikas at Somerset Bridge ferry dock.A ‘Community Commentator’ said: “We love our Filipino community. I hope the hatred of a few ignorant people does not taint the appreciation we hold for them and their contribution to our island home.”To see all the comments visit www.theroyalgazette.bm.
