Smith hails Island's swimmers
Bermuda national swim coach Ben Smith has the hailed the performance of the Island's swimmers at the FINA World Championships in China.Roy Allan Burch, Keira Aitken and Julian Fletcher are all at the event, and have enjoyed some limited success over the past couple of days. While none have yet to achieve a qualifying time for next year's Olympic Games, Fletcher and Aitken have both posted personal bests in their respective disciplines, while Burch knocked seven-tenths of a second off his national record in the Men's 100m Long Course Freestyle event.“I have been pleased with the focus of the team to this point and to have lifetime best swims after the swimsuit ban makes their performances even more important,” said Smith."Julian Fletcher swam his lifetime best in the 100m breast but was not at the level to make his Olympic qualifying time. Julian needs to have more opportunities to race in a 50 metre pool against strong competition as the race is completely different than the 100 yards that he swims at University.”“Kiera swam her main event the 100m back where she performed well but not at her fastest for the season and not at the level of the qualifying time.“Julian had his second swim in the 50m breast where he swam his lifetime best and broke the national record that he had set in the now banned competition suits."
