Rhondelle Tankard

Bermudian Rhondelle Tankard, 31, had only started working at the World Trade Center the day before the terrorist attacks. Before arriving in New York, she had been working for the Aon insurance company in Bermuda. She had shown ambition and talent which led to her being offered the opportunity to further her career by undertaking a two-month secondment at the firm’s offices in New York.On the fateful morning of September 11, Rhondelle was at a meeting on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. She perished when the tower collapsed shortly after it had been hit by one of the two hijacked airliners that struck the twin towers. In tributes paid to her afterwards, Rhondelle’s sense of humour and positive attitude to life were highlighted by those who knew her. She was a talented singer and musician and was a churchgoer with a strong faith. Rhondelle was also devoted to her grandmother Gloria Bean and her family.Following her death a service to celebrate her life was held. The service took place at St Paul AME Church, on Court Street, and lasted for three hours. Gospel choirs filled the streets in the surrounding area as people who had loved Rhondelle marked her passing with one of the things she loved the most music. This weekend, on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Rhondelle’s parents Cheryl Burrows and Rudolph Bean are expected to attend the memorial events in New York.
