Woman, 53, found guilty of cannabis conspiracy

A jury has convicted drug smuggler Mary Johnson of conspiring to import cannabis to Bermuda. She has been remanded into custody before sentencing.Johnson, 53, of Pembroke, was apprehended by US drug enforcement agents at Newark Liberty International Airport on October 21 of last year directly after she boarded a flight back to the Island. Her four items of luggage were found to contain a total of 49 kg of wrapped cannabis, concealed in false bottoms.Johnson maintained her innocence throughout the trial. She admitted accepting more than $2,500 from a man referred to as KJ, whom she said resided in the Deepdale area of Pembroke, and was known to her as a drug dealer.Despite Johnson’s insistence that she took the cash without ever agreeing to bring back the luggage for KJ, a jury this afternoon deliberated less than an hour before unanimously finding her guilty of conspiring with others, between a date unknown and October 21, 2010, to smuggle the cannabis into Bermuda.Part of Johnson’s defence was that she feared gangsters would kill her if she did not return with the bags she had been given in Newark. Her five-day trip to the US had been to visit a terminally-ill relative, she said. She said she had been under duress, and had not understood the contents of the “illegal” bags she had been given. Johnson also claimed she was swayed by KJ’s promise of cash because she’d had to use her travel money to pay for car repairs.Defence lawyer Larry Mussenden asked Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves for a substance abuse report and social inquiry report before Johnson returns to court for sentencing in November.
