St George’s mayor denies trash collection is a problem

St George’s Mayor Kenneth Bascome fired back at comments published in yesterday’s The Royal Gazette criticising the state of the town.In a letter to this newspaper published yesterday under a pseudonym, a member of the public said the town needs to remove trash from the town before Wednesday, when the town will be visited by UK travel agents. The writer of the letter, calling themself “Ohhowitusedtobe” wrote, in part: “With a display of the ‘dipping’ in St George’s due to take place this Wednesday at 9.30am one hopes by that time the Corporation will have arranged for the trash bins to have been emptied.”Responding to the letter, Mr Bascome said both he and the workers at the Corporation of St George’s took offence to the comments.“Usually when I see letters like that I don’t read them, but this one was brought to my attention by workmen, who are totally upset,” he said. “I do take offence to that because I know for a fact that this town, as far as garbage bins, are dumped long before 9.30 in the morning.”While the writer also commented on the state of several buildings in St George’s, Mr Bascome said Corporation staff were doing as much as possible to keep the town clean. Mr Bascome also noted that the dunking takes place at 12.30 not 9.30, and has done so for the last three decades. “It has been that way for over 30 years. Any time a special request is made to hold it at another time, we usually try to oblige that, but the dunkings don’t take place at 9.30am.”Mr Bascome said that rather than publish an anonymous letter, the writer should have contacted him to express his concerns.“If this person had a complaint they could contact myself as mayor of the town and we could address the issue.”
