Expect strong winds, heavy surf from Ophelia

Hurricane Ophelia will pass East of Bermuda later today, buffeting the Island with strong winds, occasional showers and heavy surf along South Shore.The Bermuda Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for the weekend.Ophelia’s closest point of approach, around 150 miles, is said to be at 8pm tonight.Upgraded to Category 3 yesterday, Ophelia is expected to be a Category 2 storm as it nears the Island.Gale force gusts are possible this afternoon and tonight, and showers with a risk of thunder could persist through Monday.Tropical storm Philippe, some 1,100 miles Southeast of Bermuda this morning, continues on a westerly course.Follow both on The Royal Gazette’s online storm watch page.
