Craig Cannonier was today appointed the Leader of the Official Opposition at Government House.“I am very humbled by this appointment. It has been, not necessarily a long journey, but a well run journey and I believe the integrity of all of us in this room speaks very loudly,” he said immediately after Governor Sir Richard Gozney signed the appointment papers.Close to three dozen supporters - friends and family as well as OBA MPs and party executives - attended the brief ceremony.Mr Cannonier thanked his family for their support saying they understood the need of public service. He continued: “And I want you to understand that, my premise for standing before you this morning is we must be about the people of this Country. There is a lot of pain, there is a lot of concern. I think about the young men in the newspaper right now.“We just lost a family member, Landro Minors, to a bike accident. I think about the young man Mr. Outerbridge who just lost his life. And one of the things that I am encouraged about is the fact that the One Bermuda Alliance continues to band together and continues to fight the good fight and that it believes in the faith of its people, Bermudians, that we will come together and that we will find a way overcome these hurdles that we find ourselves in.”He went on to say that the Country faces a crisis in education, with crime and the economy, “and our people want to know how are we going to bring this country together”. But he said he was excited that the One Bermuda Alliance could “give Bermuda what it needs”.“I believe in everyone of you, One Bermuda Alliance,” he said addressing the OBA MPs and party executives in attendance.Mr Cannonier also paid tribute to retired MP John Barritt, whose decision to step down made it possible for Mr Cannonier to run for elective office. He ended his remarks by quoting Dr Martin Luther King. “‘Tomorrow really is today. We are faced with the urgency of now.' And I stand in this room with people who are faced with the urgency of now,” he said.“Let's get on with the business of the people, folks, let's get to work.”Meanwhile, Michael Fahy and Toni Daniels will be the new Senators for the One Bermuda Alliance, The Royal Gazette can reveal. They will replace Craig Cannonier who has left the Senate to become MP for Devonshire South Central, and Kathy Michelmore who is leaving the Island.A lawyer who works in international business, Michael Fahy is the former Chairman of the OBA. Ms Daniels is co-owner of health food store Down to Earth.
