Sloop Foundation announces new fundraising initiative

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation has announced that in an effort to raise funds for its youth programmes it will be turning to piracy. The Foundation is today starting its First Annual Pirates of Bermuda Fundraiser with Governor Sir Richard Gozney authorising ‘privateers’ to kidnap selected members of the community. Those people, including politicians, athletes and notable members of the business community, will have to raise $2,500 by March 2 to pay their ransom, or walk the plank. While donors can help keep participants dry by making donations, they can also put money towards ensuring the participants walk the plank. The Foundation said it hopes the fundraiser will bring in at least $100,000, which will go towards the continued operation of its programmes, which to date has benefited more than 2,300 students.Ten percent of the proceeds raised will be donated to the growing medical expenses of 15-year-old Nahge O’Brien, who is battling leukaemia.Nahge, a CedarBridge student, was heavily involved with the Sloop Foundation and the Spirit of Bermuda until a recent relapse. He is currently overseas receiving treatment, but reportedly doing better.Useful website: www.piratesofbermuda.com.
