No ship, but town sees a rise in number of visitors on Good Friday

The re-enactment of the crucification in St George was given a boost by more visitors to the town on Good Friday.

The contingency plan to bus cruise ship passengers from Hamilton to St George on Good Friday resulted in an extra large crowd of spectators for the annual re-enactment of the crucifixion.St George’s West MP Kim Swan believes the cancellation of the east end stopover due to high winds “was not for nought.”The east end MP who was elected under the United Bermuda Party banner said: “It was very pleasing to see scores of visitors participating in the huge procession between the various churches in the town of St George’s for the annual Good Friday passion play re-enactment.“The diverse participation was fitting homage to the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ.”But he said: “The cruise ship cancellation was a bitter reminder of the economic reality of operating a town without a dedicated cruise ship in port an irony that has had an unfortunate negative impact on our economic viability.”While thankful for the contingency plan to bus passengers to the east end, he said: “We will continue to prod for a needed effort to find a boutique ship to operate to and exclusively service our historic, exotic working seaport town.”St George’s retailers reported brisk sales after they were issued the green light be open for business on Good Friday. The Azamara Journey was due in port with an estimated 736 passengers who disembarked on Front Street in Hamilton due to high winds.Mr Swan added: “A concerted campaign to reconnect St George’s with a strategic port on the eastern seaboard (ie Boston, Baltimore, Charleston or New York) would also help raise both the town of St George’s and Bermuda’s awareness as must visit destinations.”But for now he said: “Good Friday in St George’s captured the true spirit of this religious holiday, with the annual re-enactment of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary.“The attendance represented a diverse group of Bermudians and visitors celebrating the true meaning of the day Good Friday.”The event is organised by the various churches and denominations in St George’s. The live Passion Re-enactment began at Ebenezer Methodist Church, progressed to Richard Allen AME, the Unfinished Church, Salvation Army, Stella Maris Catholic Church, St Peter’s Church and culminated at Ordnance Island.
