Diamond Jubilee celebration plans revealed

Three days of “family-centred, inclusive” celebrations are planned across the Island for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.Events to commemorate the milestone will be held Saturday, June 2 through Monday, June 4.A Diamond Jubilee Committee spokesman said: “Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee has already inspired countries across the Commonwealth and in the Overseas Territories to renew a sense of community, and to celebrate those qualities which have exemplified the Queen’s 60 years as Sovereign: commitment, dedication to duty and strong support of charitable causes.”A flotilla is to sail from Hamilton Harbour to Dockyard on June 2.The flotilla will be led by the Marine & Ports ferry JL Cecil Smith, the vessel used by Her Majesty when she visited the Island in 2009. Local mariners are invited to join in.A street festival in Dockyard later that day will be followed by an evening lighting of beacons around the Island.On the following day, an interfaith service will be held at the Anglican Cathedral and the Bermuda Regiment will perform. A “picnic in the park” with entertainment and family events will follow the service.June 4 is proposed as a charity day, where residents are encouraged to participate in a project in support of local causes.A Bermuda Cedar will also be planted in Coney Island Park that day, beginning an area to be designated the Jubilee Grove.And two Jubilee scholars are to be formally recognised for “academic prowess and all-round qualities”.The Department of Communication and Information is to compile a DVD of the celebrations and present it to the Palace.
