Anglicans formally told of Bishop's plans

Anglican church members were told yesterday by their Bishop, Patrick White, of his plans to retire.As The Royal Gazette first reported on Saturday, the Bishop plans to leave his post on or before his 70th birthday in September.Although he could not be reached for comment yesterday, it was confirmed by other clergymen that a letter from him was read to church congregations announcing his retirement.At present, the laws of the Anglican Church in Bermuda state that a bishop “may” retire at 65 and “shall” retire at 70.The synod debated the idea of extending the retirement age recently, but the move was rejected.The Bermuda-born Bishop has been in his position since 2009.
