Outstanding carpentry graduate had nearly perfect attendance record

Years of study paid off for construction worker Jason Samuels, who took the Most Outstanding Carpentry Graduate Award from the Construction Association of Bermuda.“A man without education is like a tree without a root,” said Mr Samuels, whose skills were put to good use to assemble the staging at the Bermuda College for his graduation. His employers, Greymane Construction, put him through the wood technology course at the college’s Associate in Applied Science programme.Mr Samuels, 31, had to fit his studies around work, travel, plus his wife Cindy and their children — and still only missed one class in two years. The internationally recognised certification is approved by the National Centre for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) in the US.“Right now is a good time to pick up a certification,” he said. “The industry is slow, but later, as things pick up, you’ll be qualified for a higher position.”Useful websites: www.nccer.org, www.bercol.bm.
