Governor sails in RBYC regatta

Governor George Fergusson capped a memorable sailing debut on local waters during the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s Anniversary Regatta.Mr Fergusson was among the Team Tiburón crew that swept line honours in both races sailed in the regatta.Team Tiburón was led by RBYC skipper Mark Watson.Summing up Friday’s experience, Mr Fergusson said: “My first sail in Bermuda was very, very good fun. I will be on the water again before very long.”The Governor sailed around the Great Sound on board the Reichel-Pugh 74 that Mr Watson sailed in this year’s Newport Bermuda Race.“It was great racing on a boat like this with some every fantastic people,” Mr Fergusson said. “The conditions were very good.”The RBYC Anniversary Regatta is the third and final race of the three-race Onion Patch Series that also includes the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta and Newport Bermuda Race.Asked would he sail in the Newport Bermuda Race if given the chance, Mr Fergusson replied: “I’d love to. I’ve seen some very expert crew here, but I don’t put myself in that league.”Team Tiburón skipper Mr Watson said it was a privilege to have the Governor along for the ride.“We put him on the helm in between the races and had fun talking about sailing and you couldn’t have asked for a nicer day,” the Argo Group CEO added.RBYC commodore Jonathan Brewin gave the Governor’s brief spell at the wheel the proverbial thumbs up.“He took the helm between the races and of course a boat like that is highly specialised and has particular traits,” the HWP CEO said. “But he seemed to get the hang of those traits fairly swiftly.“We had brilliant racing conditions and it was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day. The crew were magnificent and the Governor really enjoyed it.”Team Tiburón was the fourth boat across the finish line in this year’s 635-mile Newport Bermuda Race on a corrected time of 40 hours, 38 minutes and 24 seconds respectively.Andrew Weiss’ J122, Christopher Dragon, won the RBYC Regatta while Steve Murray’s Carkeek HP 40, Decision, came out as the first place individual boat in the Onion Patch Series.
