Haiti mission for Spirit of Bermuda

The Spirit of Bermuda set sail yesterday (MONDAY) on a service mission voyage to poverty-stricken Haiti. The purpose of the mission is to assist Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s (BSF) partners, Feed My Lambs Ministry, with the construction of a school and health clinic in the coastal town of Montrouis.Montrouis is located on the west coast of the Caribbean Island.BSF Education and Programmes Manager Lakai Dill said: “We are going down with 27 young people between the age of 14 and 34 to help with the construction of the school and health clinic that they also operate on the same property. They started building a school at the beginning of this year that will accommodate up to 400 students.”Feed My Lambs Ministry is based and registered in Haiti. The charity, which was founded by Bermudian Phillip Rego, is also registered in both USA and Bermuda. The group travelling to Haiti has been divided into two.One group will fly to Haiti and will be based there for ten days to commence the service project while the remaining group sail down on Spirit of Bermuda.Halfway through the mission the group that flew down will sail back and vice versa. Also taking part in the service mission voyage is Clarence Maxwell Jr who will serve as educator. During the mission the local historian will conduct research on the relationship between Bermuda and the French Caribbean Islands.Dr Maxwell has also developed an intriguing curriculum for those involved in the mission.“We are going to learn about Bermudian smuggling and about the Haitian revolution and why the country is in the state that it is in,” Ms Dill said. “It’s going to be a very, very intense experience.”During the voyage to and from the Caribbean all crew members on Spirit of Bermuda will get the opportunity to navigate the purpose-built sail training vessel that took part in last month’s Newport Bermuda Race.“When we have participants on board they learn how to do dead reckoning and a bit of celestial navigation as well,” Ms Dill said. “Every hour they will plot a dead reckoning position to keep track of the boat, so the participants towards the end of the sailing portion will know enough to actually take control of the ship.”Spirit of Bermuda will be under the command of captain Scott Jackson and first officer Mario Swainson. The crew on board the triple-mast sloop have been divided into three watches to be led by a designated officer and watch leader.
