Wall still to be repaired after a year
More than a year after a St George’s wall fell on a motorist, work on repairs has yet to begin. However, area MP Kim Swan says he has been speaking with the Government about the issue and he has been told the wall on Wellington Lane will be repaired.“I was advised by the Minister of Works that his Ministry of Public Works have recently agreed to have the wall repaired under their dangerous walls vote,” Mr Swan said.“It is my information that there were initially some legal issues to consider, but the danger to residents made it necessary to have the area barricaded to create a safer passage for pedestrians and motorists.“I have expressed the wishes of residents to have the wall repaired sooner rather than later — especially for safety reasons and the concern by parents of curious schoolchildren who may not take precautions when walking by.”On July 20, 2011, the rock face on Wellington Lane collapsed due to the effects of heavy rain. As it collapsed, 32-year-old Marvin Iris happened to be riding down the road on a motorcycle. As a result, Mr Iris lost control of the bike and fell, suffering injuries to his back and damage to the vehicle. Then Public Works Minister Derrick Burgess released a statement the following day, saying that emergency repair works would be a priority, and that the road would be reopened before Cup Match. The Ministry of Public Works has not responded to a request for comment as of press time.
