It may be said that Cup Match boils down to two questions: How are you spending the holiday, and which team do you support? This year marks the 110th anniversary of the annual cricket match. The Royal Gazette took to the streets of Hamilton to find out whether residents were planning to head to Somerset Cricket Club to watch as reigning champions St George’s battled Somerset for the cup.Somerset supporter Kettina Spence said: “I’m thinking about going. I support Somerset because I live up that way. If I don’t go to the game, I’ll be going to the beach.”Teenager Ny-Rory Daniels said: “No I’m not going to the game, I plan on staying in bed.”He said he didn’t support either team “because I don’t like cricket”.St George’s fan Keeva Baxter said: “I plan to stay in bed, in my A/C. I might go to the beach in the evening, when the sun is down. It’s just too hot!”Crown and Anchor enthusiast Thomas Okai told us: “Yeah I’m going to the game. I’m going to play some Crown and Anchor you know, take a chance. It’s free money basically.”The Somerset supporter added: “I might be going down the beach, just sit down there and chill.”Enthusiastic Somerset supporter Sonya Smith excitedly told us: “Of course I’m going to the game! I’ll be watching the game, partying and making some new friends.”Ms Smith said she’s not a fan of Crown and Anchor and would be dividing her time over the holiday.“I will visit my family at the camp sites at [Somerset] Long Bay. We have the best view. Our house is right outside Somerset Cricket Club so we can see everything. I hope Somerset wins!”Flaunting hair coloured Somerset’s red and blue, Tanesha Gilbert said: “No, I’m not going to the game but I will go to the beach. I support Somerset because my family is from Somerset. Ask anyone you know where the Gilberts are from and they’ll tell you Somerset. I got my hair done like this to represent.”“I don’t have a team,” said Kim Worboys. “I’m a Bermudian but I live abroad. This Cup Match I won’t be going to the game but I will be out on the boat and going swimming.”Teenager Luis Correia will also miss the match.“I’m not going to the game. I’m not into cricket, so I don’t have a team,” he said. “I’m working on Thursday and I’ll probably be chilling at the beach for the rest of the holiday.”St George’s supporter Satara Caisey said: “Of course I’m going [to the game]! Both days, all day. Half of my family supports Somerset and half support St George’s. I live in Southampton, but I support St George’s.”Schoolteacher Andrew Jones told us: “I’m neutral [in terms of team support] because I’m not Bermudian. I’m going to Thursday’s game because I’m going away on Friday. I might go to BeachFest [celebrations at Horseshoe Bay] too.”Added Somerset supporter Tucker Powell: “I don’t know if I’m going to the game. If I don’t I’ll probably be hanging out at my aunt’s beach. My mum is for St George’s and my dad is for Somerset.”Young cricketer Amani Evvin told us: “Yes, I’m going to the game on Thursday and raising money for the national Bermuda cricket team’s under-13s’ trip to England.”Despite his enthusiasm for the sport, he said: “I don’t have a team. My family is for both sides.”Said Rebecca Madeiros: “I support St George’s; it’s my family’s heritage.“I’m not going to the game, I’m going to be relaxing at my grandparents’ pool with the children. Every year we have a tradition of going up there and having a barbecue on the weekend.”
