5K event to honour Marco Warren
A walk, run and ride honouring the late footballer and youth mentor Marco Warren will take place at Bermuda Institute on Sunday.
The Marc of Excellence 5K Walk, Run, Ride & Remember starts at 8am, with participants setting off from and returning to the school at 234 Middle Road, Southampton.
Organised by Bermuda Institute’s Home and School Association, alongside its Sports Committee, the annual fundraiser has been renamed in tribute to Mr Warren, a former student.
Registration costs $30 for adults and $15 for children aged 5 to 15. The first 250 registered participants will receive a commemorative shirt. Bibs and shirts should be collected at the school before the event begins.
LeVar Basset, president of the Bermuda Institute’s Home and School Association, said: “This year's event will honour the life and legacy of the late Marco Warren, a proud Bermuda Institute alumnus whose contributions to football, youth development and community service reflected the very qualities the school seeks to nurture in every student.”
He added that the event also sought to recognise the many other Bermudians — past and present — who had positively influenced the lives of those around them.
Mr Warren captained PHC Zebras and represented Bermuda internationally. He was named the Bermuda Football Association’s Premier Division Most Valuable Player three times, receiving his third award in April 2023, and helped PHC to Premier Division and Friendship Trophy successes.
Away from football, he worked with the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation as a youth mentor and programme leader, helping children to build confidence and develop their abilities.
He also earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design at Flagler College in Florida.
Organisers have extended a special invitation to the Bermuda Football Association, football clubs, players, coaches, officials and youth academies to join the tribute. Schools, churches, businesses, alumni and families are also encouraged to take part, whether as participants, volunteers or spectators.
Although inspired by Mr Warren, the initiative is intended to become an annual celebration recognising Bermudians who have contributed through sport, education, mentorship and community service.
Proceeds will support Bermuda Institute, registered charity No 552, and its Home and School Association.
