A Michael Jackson impersonator plans to return to Bermuda despite having been detained by Immigration officials when he first arrived.MJX told The Royal Gazette he was “very much in shock when it happened”, but is grateful to Minister of Tourism Wayne Furbert, who came to his rescue.“I think that considering the Minister got involved and I saw how concerned he was about the treatment that I received, I feel much better about coming back to Bermuda,” he said. The 36-year-old New Jersey-based entertainer — who never shares his real name — was hired by the organisers of a large private birthday party for an American guest at Elbow Beach Hotel. As The Royal Gazette revealed yesterday, he and his assistant were detained by officials at LF Wade International Airport on Friday afternoon when it emerged that he did not have a work permit. They were later taken to the Grotto Bay Beach Hotel, where they were guarded by two officers from a private security firm. One of them told MJX he would have to pay $500 for his stay, before being sent home the next day.“I guess I hoped the situation was going to get rectified but it seemed to go from bad to worse,” he said. “When it initially happened at the airport, they weren’t very friendly to me.“I was trying to keep it very light, telling them why I was here. I offered to show them my costumes and everything because it’s a little unique what I do, but I thought they were looking at me like a criminal and it was very serious what was going on.”MJX said his clients are responsible for handling all the paperwork necessary for overseas jobs, and he did not realise there was a problem until he got to Bermuda.“The Immigration officer said ‘we’re not taking you to jail, we’re taking you to a nice hotel because we’re not going to do that to you’.“But when we got there, the guard came out and asked me for my credit card. When I asked why, she said ‘you have to pay for the hotel’,” he recalled. At around 9.30pm, the Minister called him on the phone. Mr Furbert told The Royal Gazette on Sunday that he heard about MJX’s plight from “a concerned hotelier”.The entertainer said: “I’ve learned a lot since being in Bermuda about the Government and what his position is.“At the time, when I was in the hotel room with the guards and got a phone call from him, and he said that he was going to get me out, I didn’t know who he was.”The Minister stayed at Grotto Bay until midnight, when MJX and his assistant were released, drove them to their accommodation and bought dinner.According to MJX, Mr Furbert “handled” the situation so he did not have to pay for his room at Grotto Bay.The Minister then went to Elbow Beach to watch MJX perform at the party on Saturday night. The entertainer said the event was attended by around 50 other guests, who he believes were mostly from the Philadelphia area.MJX, who has been working as an impersonator for five years, has featured on various US TV shows including TLC’s ‘Four Weddings’ and Bravo’s ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’.He caused quite a stir when he set out to explore Bermuda on Sunday.“Honestly, the reception I received here made me feel that I could come back. Everybody was so excited.“I don’t know how many pictures I have had taken. I went to the beach yesterday and hopefully if I come back, I will be able to see all the sights,” he said.MJX discussed with Mr Furbert the possibility of him returning to Bermuda to perform at the final night of Bermuda Nights In the Park next month.“The Minister wanted to see if there might be a way we can plan something,” he revealed.“I would definitely come back. I think this was a very unusual situation that’s all. I try to always look on the bright side of things.”Useful websites: www.mjxpressions.com, www.gotobermuda.com.
