The Labour Day festivities are a collaboration between the Corporation of Hamilton, the Department of Tourism and several other sponsors and are being produced by Startime Productions and Spanish Town Entertainment.General manager of Startime Eugene Bean said of the weekend’s plans: “This collaboration between Startime, Corporation of Hamilton and Department of Tourism, it represents the potential that exists within government ministries working with the people.“There’s a lot of creativity, ingenuity and excellence that exists within the community at large.“I would just like to say hats off to the Tourism Department and the Corporation of Hamilton, both large organisations who really don’t have to work with the people but who have chosen to do so. I encourage other government organisations and Ministries to look at the success that it brings.“It’s great for everybody to use their language, but what we all know is things are a lot easier said than done.“With that in mind we encourage the whole community to come out and support the Labour Day festivities in the hopes that it can inspire the government and the community to work together much more henceforth.”Meanwhile, the Uptown Carnival planned for Labour Day has been cancelled.Organiser for the Uptown Market Association Elmore Warren said the cancellation is due to “the lack of our ability to provide some basic infrastructure needed for vendors, staging and sound”.“While the area businesses showed great support they could not shoulder the cost alone. With many artists giving of their time we needed to ensure a seamless, positive, enjoyable experience for all the carnival participants and entertainers.”Plans for the carnival originally included bands, a parade, food stalls and crown and anchor pits with aspirations for becoming “the most exciting annual family event in Bermuda for locals and tourist alike”.Despite this year’s cancellation, Mr Warren said they have already begun replanning the carnival for Labour Day 2013.“Going forward I’m pleased to say we now have a major sponsor on board for next year who believes in the need to assist with some of the positive changes needed in North Hamilton while at the same time making a much needed contribution to the Bermuda Tourism product,” Mr Warren said. “Our work continues to get everything in order a year in advance with promotion starting early in the new year, locally and overseas.”Useful websites: www.moonlightmovieseries.com, www.cityofhamilton.bm.
