Online commentators speak out over story
Yesterday’s article on Bermudian mothers uprooting to the UK prompted more than 100 comments on The Royal Gazette website, including these:Rasdave: “The benefits in the UK is not what people think. Yes they give you a house and some living allowance but you have to look for employment they do not paid forever,“I am a Bermudian living in the UK. I have not had any benefit I have not worked for four years.“Then you have to deal with snow, rain, almost all the time and to fine [sic] a job is not ease and they do not paid very much. The price of food is on the up, childcare is very expensive so before you make the move make sure that is for you and do your research.”RealityBites: “A life on benefits in the UK is hardly a life to be envied. It is ultimately depressing. You live in the worst areas of the country with little hope of anything better. Those in authority treat you like a second-class citizen and you have to answer to them for any change in your situation.“If you plan on making the move over there, get all your ducks in a row first and prepare to go to work or go to school.”Joey Bag-o-doughnuts: “Boy, I remember when Bermuda had the third highest standard of living in the world. Oh yeah, in those days they were different political winds.”GombeyMan: “Parents are looking to the UK for better opportunities all around. There is more to do and learn in the UK and Europe is next door. What a lot of transplants don't know is it is not an easy life even if you find a job. Living off of benefits is like being a second-class citizen but you can use the time to get an education.“Truth is, few of these fathers really care about where their kids are. They did not take care of them while in Bermuda so taking them to the UK is a relief. Of course you will have a handful of distressing cases.”Nestor: “Nobody can live decently on council benefits in England. Plus, with David Cameron, this has been tracked down. Do you think that the Conservatives will give out money that easily to just anyone coming from just anywhere? It happens; but not that easily. Plus big shame on Bermuda to allow her women to have to emigrate to beg for other people's money. Bermuda, once the financial jewel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!”
