Women with anger or relationship issues may benefit from new programme
Are you so consumed with others that you lose sight of yourself? Is everything and everybody getting on your nerves or do you find yourself hurting the ones you love?If you answered yes to any of the above, the Centre Against Abuse will launch at 12-week programme that may be just for you.The ‘New Beginnings Anger Management and Relationship Education for Women’ series begins on Wednesday to help women make better choices when it comes to relationships. The series, designed by programme director Rosana Vickers, is run twice a year. This is the fourth time the course has been offered at the Centre Against Abuse. The list of topics includes ‘How to tell if you’re a booty call’, ‘Effects of domestic violence on children’, and ‘Forgiveness’.Executive director Laurie Shiell explained the course was developed for women who have been through bad relationships to discuss what they had in common.“What we have found based on the women we see as clients in abusive relationships is quite often the women need help to develop a sense of self worth. Quite often after one bad relationship after another women tend to lower their standards instead of raising them,” said Ms Shiell.“We will also have men who have graduated from our batterers intervention programme, which runs for a minimum of 26 weeks come in to talk to the participants. They will discuss their roles in relationships that turned bad and some of the things they did as ‘womanisers’,” she added.Past participants will also talk about how this course and the services run by the Centre Against Abuse changed their lives.Ms Vickers said one of the main issues to be discussed will focus on making the right choices. “I see a lot of young women come in who picked the same type of partner over and over.“They were not making the best choices for themselves and couldn’t figure out why when there is a pattern. This course is not just for intimate relationships however, if you’re having challenges on your job, with your children or relatives, there is information here for you,” she said.“We’ve even had clients come in who are in their 70s which is great because it’s never too late to learn more about yourself. If you’re angry all the time, this is a way to take a good look at yourself and get to the core of who you are so you can go into 2013 much healthier than the year before,” she added. The workshop begins on Wednesday at 6.30pm at the Centre Against Abuse. The fee is $120 for the 12-week programme. For more information call 292-4366 or e-mail rvickers@centreagainstabuse.bm.
