A little help goes a long way for those who are in dire need. That was Diane Kirwin’s message to members of the Hamilton Rotary Club in their meeting at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club yesterday.Ms Kirwin has been working in Bihar, India for the past 13 years. She’s provided educational and health support to needy people in the village, located in the western part of the country. The mother-of-five was raised in Bermuda and attended BHS before furthering her education at the University of Southern Colorado where she gained a bachelor’s degree in social work. She later earned a master’s degree at Denver University in the same field. She decided to make a difference upon seeing the poor conditions and state that the children were living in.She helped the villagers build a sewing centre, books and a new school classes were previously held in a cow shed.“We were able to purchase some land where the new school is now located as well as a new sewing clinic and health centre,” said Ms Kirwin. “Everyone we worked with are poor and the children themselves are poor, and it was great to see that they were given uniforms and it raised the hopes of the children to attend school to better themselves.“One of the villages is what they called a ‘new village’ and some of the students had to walk as far as seven kilometres to get to where they needed to be, and when I went to visit the village they were very kind and thoughtful.“One little boy showed me his house that was made out of mud and used candles to study and read as there wasn’t any electricity.“The sewing centre was crucial for the ladies as they can enhance their ability to get married by knowing how to sew, and it is also a way of mingling with other women in the village.”
