Meals on Wheels founder Kay Robinson dies

Meals on Wheels founders: The late Dorothy Evans and Kay Robinson, who died earlier this month.

Meals on Wheels was dealt a devastating blow with the death of one of its pioneers earlier this month.Kay Robinson founded the charity in 1975 with Dorothy Evans, and had worked to promote it ever since.“She was certainly a pioneer for the organisation, she was a wonderful person and very dedicated to what she believed in,” said volunteer coordinator Gladys Madeiros.“She was one of the founders many years ago and she was a real joy to work with.“You don’t find people that are willing to dedicate themselves to helping others and she was a rare breed in that aspect of her life.”Mrs Evans, who died two years ago, learned of the Meals on Wheels programme while living in Canada. She returned to the Island and discussed the idea of starting such a charity here with Mrs Robinson.Meals on Wheels has since provided an invaluable service to the Island’s housebound seniors, delivering hot meals to those in need four times a week. The meals were initially purchased from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and distributed to five persons in the central parishes. The charity grew from that small act of kindness, with volunteers cooking meals at its South Road premises and delivering to seniors around the Island.Mrs Robinson and Mrs Evans “set the foundation” on which Meals On Wheels operates today, Mrs Madeiros added.“You couldn’t come and just sit around when there was work to do. She was very no-nonsense and a beautiful woman,” she said of Mrs Robinson.“Her outlook on how things should be done was very direct. When you have 45 volunteers that need to be on the move and getting food out to those in need — it really ran like clockwork.“It took a lot of organisation and having the right people in the right place to get the job done.”Meals on Wheels was recently recognised by the Department of Health for its contribution to the community.
