New recruits are being sought by the Human Rights Commission.The news comes after the Human Human Rights Amendment Act 2012 came into operation on Friday, October 26.The change to the law provided for an independent selection and appointment committee to recruit, interview and appoint Human Rights Commissioners.A Government spokesman said: “The selection and appointment committee will meet to review applications, interview candidates and make appointments to serve as Commissioners on the Human Rights Commission and ensure a diverse composition of Commissioners, which is representative of the community.”The committee is seeking applications from members of the public who are interested in serving as Human Rights Commissioners. Up to 12 of them will be appointed to serve for a three-year term.“The composition of the Commission requires that one-third of the Commissioners be members of the Bermuda Bar in good standing, while two-thirds will be drawn from the general public,” explained the spokesman.“The Commissioners of the Human Rights Commission serve as members of Human Rights Tribunals to adjudicate complaints made under the Act.“Commissioners also serve as educators and advocates of human rights, inclusion and equality.”Those who are interested should contact the office of the Human Rights Commission on 295-5859 or e-mail humanrights@gov.bm.The closing date for applications is Wednesday, December 19, 2012.
