Call for road to be made safer after fatal crashes

A Devonshire man is calling on Government to improve a dangerous stretch of road in his neighbourhood where several traffic fatalities have occurred.Greg Seymour said three people have died in accidents outside his home in the past six years. The restaurant owner is now worried that increased traffic along North Shore Road from Loyal Hill to Store Hill could lead to another death.“There have been three road fatalities already on this one piece of stretch,” he said. “It doesn’t hit home until it happens to someone’s family member and then everyone wants something done.“We have been [living] here for two fatal accidents and there are two crosses next to each other for those who have been killed. This needs to be addressed.“Just because it is a main road doesn’t mean things can’t be done. Traffic can be slowed down, things can be sorted out such as doing the work at night and so forth so that it doesn’t interfere with the flow of traffic during the day.”His restaurant, Flame, sits on that same stretch of North Shore along with Camara’s Carpentry, Palmetto Palms rehabilitation centre and Terceira’s gas station.Mr Seymour said he contacted the Road Safety Council in an effort to combat the speeding and frequent road accidents there.“I’m awaiting their response to the matter,” he said. “They said they would do something and send out an e-mail about what can be done, but it is an emergency situation.“It is becoming a very serious situation with the traffic that is driving up and down the road and the stores that are located around here.”Former UBP leader Kim Swan and his wife Cindy were involved in an accident on the stretch of road in 2009.“We will urge the Road Safety Council to evaluate this stretch of road — as a frequent serious accident spot — to determine if any additional warning signals or apparatus is required to lower speeds and heighten awareness to reduce the chance of an accident at this location,” he said.Neither the Road Safety Council nor the Transport Ministry responded to questions for comment by press time.
