Don’t forget while celebrating CADA offers free taxis at 3am

An estimated 10,000 passengers have taken advantage of the Let Us Drive Campaign run by the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.CADA started the campaign five years ago. The charity’s chairman Anthony Santucci yesterday issued the annual call for holiday motorists to abstain from driving while under the influence of alcohol.“We want to make sure everyone has an enjoyable Christmas and New Year’s Eve.“The vast major of road traffic accidents and fatalities on Bermuda’s roads is directly linked to the influence of drugs and alcohol,” said Mr Santucci. He urged motorists to use a designated driver or take a cab home after celebrating.“Take your turn to be the designated driver this year and remember the children observe and mimic adult behaviour. Talk to them about the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs.”Free rides home are offered to revellers throughout the year from 3.15am to 3.45am on Saturdays, with taxis departing from Reid Street outside the LOM building in Hamilton.Mr Santucci said the service will run on Friday nights as well tonight and next Friday, in addition to New Year’s Eve.“I can’t imagine how many lives it has saved, at an annual cost of $100,000,” said Mr Santucci. He thanked Barcardi International, Burrows Lightbourn, Gosling’s, the City of Hamilton, and the Fairmont resorts for their ongoing sponsorship. He also commended the Bermuda Taxi Owners Association for their “undying support” over the years.Mr Santucci added: “Without them we wouldn’t have this programme, to run to both ends of the Island for passengers.”
