Sale signs across Hamilton indicate a shoppers delight for some, but for others the temptation of international shopping is still too great.Yesterday, The Royal Gazette took to the streets of Hamilton to find out if shoppers are taking advantage of the sales being offered in stores throughout the city, and if the reduced prices are enough to keep them shopping locally.Sharazan Bailey said she was excited about the opportunities the various sales offer.“In the last week I bought two pairs of boots from Gibbon’s Company. They have some nice sales up there. I had a gift card so I took advantage of that,” she said. She said that Bermuda still lacks the variety that stores in the US have, but with the higher cost of duty such sales could encourage her to shop more locally.Katherine Biffen, meanwhile, said she had been window shopping with all of the sales, but not for anything particular.“I think it’s something that’s good for the businesses. You can get some good deals right now,” she said. However, Terry Sousa said the sales were coming at the wrong time, saying he had done most of his shopping while celebrating the holidays abroad.“I don’t mind a sale, of course, but I’m not looking to buy anything right now,” he said. “I just came back from away so it just doesn’t appeal to me right now.”Ruan Duplessis also said that the sales just don’t appeal to him. He said: “I’m a ‘when needs arise’ kind of guy. When I need something, I will look for it.”Jeff Harper said he has been checking out all of the sales, comparing prices to find the best deals.“I’m looking for some new running shoes because I want to get back into running, and I’m also looking for some nice black shoes,” he said. “I’m checking everything out right now.”Hutson Carter said he hasn’t been taking advantage of the sales because he doesn’t like to shop in Hamilton.“I don’t like town. I don’t like the traffic and I don’t particularly like too many people,” Mr Carter said. “I prefer to shop down in Somerset.”A Pembroke woman, who asked not to be named, said even with the discounts she prefers to do her shopping in the US.“Things cost so much a sale doesn’t matter much to me,” she said.“The stores have a much better selection up there, so regardless of the sales, I prefer to go away.”
