Govt reviews decision on lighthouse refurbishment

Rust scars the outside of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Southampton. Government is reviewing a decision, which was taken by the previous administration, to refurbish the lighthouse.

Public Works Minister Trevor Moniz has launched a review to reconfirm decisions made by the former Government, including the refurbishment of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse.Prior to the general election, then Minister of Government Estates Michael Scott confirmed the lighthouse was on the list for major upgrades by the Department of Public Lands and Buildings. On September 25 he announced that an “exhaustive assessment” was carried out and it was determined that “some $500,000 in renovation work/repairs is required”.The announcement came in the wake of public concern regarding the rusted state of the exterior of the building and the fact that the required work had not commenced.Nearly five months later the state of the exterior of the building remains the same. The former Minister said at the time: “The external painting of a structure as tall as the lighthouse requires the construction of scaffolding and the services of a highly specialised team.“To that end, we have sought quotations from painters and construction companies with expertise and experience in painting and repairing tall steel structures.”The job also entails “sand blasting all metal surfaces and installing a new 48” high guardrail on the observation deck.Mr Scott confirmed at that time that the job “has now been tendered and the selection process has been concluded”.When contacted by The Royal Gazette, the new Minister said all contractual matters are under review to “reconfirm decisions made by the previous administration”.Said Mr Moniz: “That would include Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and we will confirm who the contract will be awarded to. We anticipate that would be done very soon.”He was not in a position to disclose the current status of tendering process.
