Residents gave betting shops brisk business over match

Betting shops did a brisk trade as patriotic locals put their money — and lost it — on Bradford City this weekend.“We would have had quite a few huge payouts if Nahki Wells had scored and Bradford had won,” admitted Sea Horses boss Lee Beauchamp.“But they didn’t. It was obviously a good result for us — though we would have been happy to pay out on something like that.”With such good odds against the underdog team, locals bet “conservatively”, he said.Very few backed the likely contender Swansea City, who ended up trouncing Bradford.National pride was the obvious reason, but Mr Beauchamp also pointed to the intense publicity that sprang up around Wells.“People got interested, and they wanted to make it more interesting,” he said.Front Street betting shop Gametime didn’t get any Swansea bets of note, said co-owner Cleon Scotland.“There were no wins on that match,” he said. “Even people who bet on the correct score didn’t go as high as five-zero.”In fact, a woman claiming to be the only successful better on Swansea to win said she’d come away with just $22, because odds were so poor. She asked not to be named, adding: “Do you want me to get hate mail?“But I’m not that much of a traitor — I also bet on Mahki to score two goals.”
