Tall ship set to call in St George’s
The 102-year-old brigantine Eye of the Wind is in Bermuda for a brief stopover at Penno’s Wharf in St George’s Harbour en route to the Azores.Maritime enthusiasts will have an opportunity to see the ancient square rigger firsthand on Friday, from 3pm to 5pm with Captain Cornel Greth from Switzerland and his crew. The ship was last here as a participant in the Tall Ships Race 2000 and during another stopover early last year. It has been featured in several movies over the years, including Blue Lagoon in 1980, the pirate movie Savage Island in 1983, Tai-Pan in 1986 and White Squall in 1996.The historic vessel was purchased by a Danish businessman who restored it and added the latest technology for modern navigation and comfort. But according to the press statement released yesterday, a sail control system was deliberately omitted.“To this day, the sails with a total area of around 750 square metres are raised and lowered by human muscle power,” the statement said.“The historic vessel became accessible to the public only in 2009 when the Danish owner died. Soon after, the beloved sailing ship found a new home port at Forum Train & Sail Ltd, a subsidiary of the German Forum Media Group.”It is used year round for cruises, exclusive charters and management training. A training programme for young people between the ages of 15 to 25 is also offered in two-week courses. For more information visit the Forum Train & Sail website at www.eyeofthewind.net.
