St George’s Mayor calls for more evening ferries

St George's Mayor Garth Rothwell

St George’s Mayor Garth Rothwell said he is disappointed with the summer ferry schedule due to a lack of evening service to the east. The schedule, set to come into effect on April 15, lists four ferries between Dockyard and St George’s on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with three ferries on Tuesday and Friday.Mr Rothwell said the lower number of ferry visits on Tuesday and Friday was perfectly reasonable, noting that cruise ships leave port on those days. However, he added that he had hoped for ferries to and from the town to continue into the evening. According to the schedule, the last ferry departs the town at 5.15pm.“The ships are in overnight and we found that if we had something in between six and seven in the evening, it would encourage people to spend all day in the town,” he said.“However we are getting a 400-seat ferry, so that will hopefully help with the lift. We were hoping for a little bit more though. An evening ferry would make a difference.”In addition to the ferry trips listed on the schedule, Mr Rothwell said he has been told there will be ferries servicing St George’s every other Saturday when there is a cruise ship in port. While those trips are not included in the printed schedule, Mr Rothwell said they will be advertised on the relevant cruise ships.Mr Rothwell also noted that rather than visiting the existing ferry terminal in St George’s near Ordnance Island, the ferry will be picking up and dropping off passengers at Penno’s Wharf.“That means visitors will be able to sit inside the cruise ship terminal while they wait for ferries and stay out of the rain or sun,” he said.“Hopefully it means they will also see more of St George’s as they will walk down Water Street on their way to Town Square and Tobacco Bay. It’s a change, but we believe it will be a change for the better.”Useful website: www.marineandports.bm
