The annual Agricultural Exhibition has been a Bermuda tradition for 75 years. But while attending the event is enough for some, others have made entering the competition a tradition in itself. For the last three decades, William Zuill has entered an assortment of produce into the exhibition every year, winning hundreds of ribbons.“I must have been doing this for 30 years or so. My parents did it for more than 30 years before that,” he said.“My family has been involved in the Ag Show for a very long time, my mother’s family particularly. One year the show was held on her family’s property. It’s a tradition as anything else.”While Mr Zuill selects the produce to be entered, he said that his long-time gardener John Lima does the hard work, from planting the seeds to reaping the results. He said his best memories from the show came from when he and his wife would work together.“I would consult her about some of the selections. She would make strong suggestions, but then I would help her to pick her flowers,” he said. “We took up veggies in the morning and flowers in the noon time.“My wife used to submit a lot of flowers and things, but those days are past unless my children or relatives want to do it. I don’t know enough about them.”Asked if he had a winning strategy, he said: “Between quantity and quality, I tend to think in terms of quantity because you can get a lot of ribbons that way. If you focus on quality, you may come first in several competitions, but you win as many ribbons.“She would look for produce that people would pick in the grocery store rather than just looking at size.”
