Season’s first tropical storm forms

The first named storm of the season formed yesterday in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Andrea had maximum sustained winds of 40mph at 6pm and was 310 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida. A tropical storm warning was issued for areas north of Fort Myers, on Florida’s west coast, up to just south of Tallahassee. As of last night the storm was travelling at three miles per hour and the storm’s centre was expected to reach the Florida coast by this afternoon, bringing up to six inches of rain for Florida and Georgia.

The storm is predicted to head along the US East Coast and is not expected to come anywhere near Bermuda.
