Charity seeks help for Back to School Drive

Back to school: A nervous time for many youngsters

The Bermuda Chapter of A Lott A Sista Love Charity is gearing up for its third annual Back to School Drive to assist up to 60 students in need.Recipients will be outfitted with full gear for the new school year, including uniforms, shoes, sneakers and school supplies.Coordinator Barbara Thomas said once again, there is no shortage of requests for assistance.“We’ve had even more requests this year and we’re strengthening ourselves to help as many students as possible,” Ms Thomas said.“We are trying to supply each child with complete uniforms, shoes, sneakers and all the other school supplies needed.“Anyone who has uniforms, shirts or monetary donations would be greatly appreciated, especially the funds which will help pay for supplies ordered.“Last year, WJ Boyles agreed to give us a discount on each gift certificate we purchased from them to assist with shoes and sneakers.“We are also making a large purchase of school supplies at a discounted rate and are presently working with our couriers and shipping companies to see if we can get a reduced rate,” she added.“Last year we had to extend our programme to meet the demand and at least 57 students were assisted.”Ms Thomas also extended a warm ‘thank you’ to “all those individuals and corporate businesses that have assisted” over the years.“Although we are small in numbers, we have a big heart and do all that is possible to extend a helping hand to those in need, not only by giving, but also through empowering women throughout the year to help the community, families and individuals to back on their feet,” said Ms Thomas. “We host educational workshops on financing, self-esteem and on communication skills.”The deadline for donations for the school drive is August 27.“Your support would be very much appreciated, not only for this school drive but to help us to continue assisting families with food, clothing and medical needs that arise throughout the year,” she said. For more information e-mail aloslbermuda@yahoo.com, call 504-2290 or visit www.alottofsistalove.org.
