‘The Lord gave me this time to shine’

2013 Night of Champions ClairAnn Moore who has been physically disabled since birth brought the crowd to their feet by walking unto the stage to do her performance Saturday night at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium (photo by Glenn Tucker)

ClairAnn Moore wasn’t joking when she said she had something big in store for Bermuda Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation’s (BBFF) 26th Annual Night of Champions.Ms Moore, who has been confined to a wheelchair due to complications associated with Scoliosis, Cerebal Palsy and Polio, left those gathered at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Saturday night awestruck as she strolled on stage with the aid of a walker and an assistant.Through regular training at SeaView Ultimate Fitness Club and at her Summer Haven residence, the former switchboard operator regained enough strength in her legs to begin moving about with a walker for the first time in a decade.Ms Moore was encouraged to begin walking again by her trainer, Mr Percy Paynter, who had no clue what his client was up to before she appeared on stage.“I was overwhelmed to the point that I had tears in my eyes,” he told The Royal Gazette. “What was also most overwhelming was the response from the audience who stood up and applauded at length. Afterwards several people came up to me and said that the most motivational thing of the night was her coming out on stage like that.”The SeaView Ultimate Fitness Club personal trainer, who has been involved in body building and fitness for half a century, admires Ms Moore’s determinationto excel in the gym.“She’s a real trooper and comes with a hunger and whatever I throw at her she absorbs it,” Mr Paynter said. “A lot of people with all their faculties make a fuss about doing a little bit of work but Clair absorbs — she’s like ‘bring it on’ and sucks it up. She’s a 55 -year old woman in a wheelchair and I’ve always been impressed with her attitude.”Mr Paynter, 70, has been working with Ms Moore for nearly a decade.“She first came to me eight years ago, but it was on and off,” he recalled. “She’s been real steady over the last four years.“I bought her some weights, stretchy bands and a ball that she can work with at home so the things she learned (at the gym) she could do in between. Then the people at Summer Haven would get her doing more cardio and things I would instruct them to do so she would keep up like that. So when she wasn’t here she was still working at home.”In the lead up to last weekend’s event Ms Moore revealed that she had something big in store for those in attendance, especially for her personal trainer Mr Paytner whose efforts to get her to spill the beans before she appeared on stage went in vain.“He wanted me to tell him what the secret was, and I told him that if I did that then it wouldn’t be a secret for you,” she said. “I told him it was something to do with him, but he didn’t know what the something was.“I was motivated by Percy to keep walking in the walker, and I wanted to surprise him. It was through Percy that I was motivated again, and the Lord has given me this time to shine.”Ms Moore said she was overwhelmed by the standing ovation she received from a captivated audience.“It really blew my mind and I said ‘wow ... this is amazing’,” she added. “I’m still on a high just thanking God for everything because without God it wouldn’t be possible. It was amazing and I thank God that I could touch the hearts of people that came together through all of this.”Ms Moore was born physically disabled but refuses to allow her disability to get in the way of her passion for body building.“Disability doesn’t have to be a disability,” she stressed. “I don’t care what disability someone might have, you can do it. You can, you can, you can because I can.”
