Man nabbed by lifeguard admits theft

A Sandys man who was chased down by a lifeguard and park rangers at Horseshoe Bay after stealing from a tourist, pleaded guilty to theft in Magistrates’ Court today.Enrico Durrant, 18, pleaded guilty to the theft of visitor Howard Arendt’s backpack.A second Sandys resident, 19-year-old Frank Herbert, denied the offence.Prosecutor Susan Mulligan said that the senior lifeguard on duty received reports of the two young males acting suspiciously on the beach. The lifeguard noticed Durrant walking down the beach and Mr Herbert in the water. Several minutes later, Herbert walked out of the water towards Durrant.The lifeguard then spotted Durrant grabbing a backpack, which contained clothes, passports, bus tokens and $40 in cash, and running into the bushes. Meanwhile, Mr Herbert ran into the bushes in the opposite direction from Durrant.The lifeguard alerted park rangers and chased Durrant, who was still carrying the backpack. The lifeguard caught Durrant and wrestled him to the ground.Durrant told the lifeguard to let him go, saying he had to pay his mother.The sister of the complainant, Sheila Arendt, chased Mr Herbert into the bushes. When she caught up with him, he pointed in the direction Durrant had gone.Both defendants were arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.Durrant told the police he went to the beach with the intention of stealing because his mother had told him not to return home without $100 and he was hungry, Ms Mulligan said.Mr Herbert insisted he only went to the Southampton beach to swim, according to the police report.Duty counsel Peter Farge told the court that Durrant had been unable to find a job despite numerous efforts. Mr Farge said Durrant understands that his actions were wrong and apologised to the tourists.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a social inquiry report for Durrant and he was remanded into custody at the Co-ed facility until sentencing on October 9.Mr Herbert’s was also remanded into custody at the Co-ed facility and his trial was set for September 17 in Magistrates’ Court.
