Architect proposes plan to create plaza next to City Hall

City Hall: Plan to create a public plaza

Plans have been submitted to modify the front of City Hall — but not by the Corporation of Hamilton.A planning application submitted recently by architect Simon Hodgson of SBDS calls for in-principal approval for the southern side of the building, including a public plaza featuring a lawn with water features to the east and west side. The plan also proposes creating a curved pedestrian walkway leading to the front of City Hall, replacing the current driveway used by vehicles. The Church Street side of the plan includes a series of steps leading from the sidewalk to the lawn, while portico steps on the northern side of the lawn would lead to the front of the building.City of Hamilton secretary Edward Benevides yesterday stated that the application is an independent application by Mr Hodgson, and is not a part of any project by the Corporation. He added: “Our current planning process allows for people to submit applications for property they do not own or lease.”Efforts to contact Mr Hodgson have been unsuccessful as of press time on Friday.
