AIG’s ‘grub day’ collects more than 900 non-perishable items for the hungry
Employees at AIG participated in a fundraising denim day with a difference this month.Instead of the usual $5 ‘grub day’ fee, employees were asked to donate three non-perishable items to be donated to The Eliza DoLittle Society to help feed the hungry.Underwriting support leader at AIG, Tia Smith said it was an ideal way to “combine donating funds to a worthy cause and the chance to dress down Fridays”.“Last week, AIG staff decided to switch the formula. The price for denim day on October 18 was not the usual $5 and the response by AIG Saff to this unconventional charitable event was outstanding,” said Ms Smith.“Each staff member who donated cash brought in an average of seven items — well over the suggested amount.“In fact, they donated over fourteen various-sized boxes of foodstuffs and household items — more than 900 items in total!”The Eliza DoLittle Society supplies food to various food centres around the island, including their Daily Bread programme.Daily Bread is a food rescue programme which collects fresh, frozen and cooked food as well as non-perishables daily from donors all over the Island and distributes that food to social service programmes for community feeding.Food donors include local hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, distributors, farmers and other local food vendors as well as charitable endeavours by companies.
