Running because they CARE

CARE Learning Centre will stage their third annual fun run and walk-a-thon this Sunday.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the school’s 2014 GED programme and Building Better Futures Programme for students who cannot afford school fees.

“The goal of CARE is to continue to build better futures making a difference in our community,” explained the charity’s founder Neletha Butterfield. “With the assistance of donations from supporters and businesses, we will continue to make a difference in our society.

“Your financial support to learning centre will ensure that our young people will be given the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

CARE, which is the acronym for Children and Adults Reaching for Education, has been educating the community for three decades.

The centre is equipped with a computerised educational lab where students learn with the aid of computers, smart boards and iPads.

Part of its mission is to instil the values of the three Rs — respect, responsibility and reaching one’s full potential.

The 2014 GED programme “enhances and enlightens” the learning path of students and meets their educational needs, development and secures their future.

The Building Better Futures Programme is an “innovative response” to the educational needs of Bermuda’s young people in need of financial assistance and another avenue to help them gain access to “quality education” to fulfil their ambitions.

Members of the public can help build a better future for someone by pledging sponsorship ranging from $30 to $5,000.

All students must adhere to the school’s rigid code of conduct and involve themselves in fundraising and extra-curricular activity on behalf of the learning centre.

Sunday’s event, which starts and ends next to Arnold’s Market on St John’s Road, Pembroke, is open to adults and juniors.

Walkers will start at 8.30am; the runners will follow 30 minutes later.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female walkers and runners in the following categories: junior (under-18), open (20-49) and masters (over 50).

Entries must be submitted by 4.30pm today. Late entries will be accepted between 11am and 2pm tomorrow at CARE Learning Centre located at 38 Mount Hill, Pembroke next to Arnold’s Market.

Official race numbers can also be obtained at the school tomorrow.
