Emotional Paris: It’s game on

It’s “game on” for seventy six year-old Stanley Paris, who has travelled almost 500 kilometres since leaving Bermuda two days ago in an attempt to become the oldest man to circumnavigate the globe.

“Yes, I was a little emotional but it soon passed, and I got on with changing my course to bear away from a group of coral reefs that were fast approaching,” wrote Mr Paris on his latest blog post.

“I see that the winds for the next few days will be light and so I expect to fall behind Dodge Morgan’s (the current record holder) average of 171.84 miles a day. Tomorrow I will get out a spinnaker (light air sail) and see if I can go faster. But for now, I am enjoying the moment. Four years of planning and execution ... it’s game on.”

As of late yesterday afternoon, Mr Paris was 464.5km south east of Bermuda.

His attempt comes more than 10 years after his son Alan completed the trip to become the first Bermudian to do so on his boat Velocity.

Aboard his 64ft cutter, ‘Kiwi Spirit’, Mr Paris hopes to achieve three distinct goals:

n To complete the circumnavigation in less than 150 day six hours and one minute — faster than Mr. Morgan

n To become the oldest person to complete the voyage.

n To complete the navigation without using any fuel at all. All power will be supplied by wind and solar energy with sealed diesel tanks available in case of emergency.

Mr Paris will have satellite communications and will be writing a blog every couple of days or so, this can be viewed at www.stanleyparis.com

He also has a yellow brick tracker that will enable people to follow his progress http://my.yb.tl/KIWISPIRIT
