Man charged with assaulting police is locked up for Christmas

A St George’s man will be spending Christmas in jail after allegedly assaulting two police officers.

Kevin Simmons, 22, appeared at Magistrates’ Court today where he denied two counts of assaulting a police officer, one of obstructing a police officer, one of violently resisting arrest and two more counts of using threatening words.

Mr Simmons was arrested yesterday after police officers attempted to remove him from a public bus on Front Street.

“Sit the f*** down,” Mr Simmons is alleged to have told officers as they approached him, continuing the verbal tirade, despite officers warning him of his language.

Mr Simmons is alleged to have become violent as officers tried to escort him off the bus, forcing them to use pepper spray on him. He appeared in court this morning with grazes under his left eye.

Mr Simmons continued kicking and spitting as officers tried to arrest him, the court heard, and even landed several blows on an officer as he was being put in the patrol car.

Mr Simmons was charged with a further count of using threatening words, which he also denied, in relation to a separate incident on Saturday.

The court heard that the alleged victim was Sylvia Smith, who he is alleged to have told: “You better don’t call the cops. I’m going to come back and break the door down.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded Mr Simmons into custody, adjourning the trial until December 30.
