Another clean-up planned for St George’s GC
A community clean-up for the overgrown St George’s Golf Course proved so successful that another is being held this weekend.
“We had an overwhelming response — we wanted to send a special ‘thank you’ to the Governor and the Premier for showing up,” said St George’s West MP Nandi Outerbridge.
“A lot of people came down on Saturday. We got a few MPs and I would also like to single out the Junior Golf Association. We’ll be doing it again this Saturday, from 9am to 1pm.”
The volunteer teams joined with four Government workers to hack back vegetation that had turned the long-disused course into an eyesore for area residents.
Many volunteers showed up with lawnmowers, including Sousa’s Landscaping, but Ms Outerbridge said equipment would also be provided to the public.
Asked if East End MPs had persuaded Government to groom the defunct course back into a fully functioning facility, Ms Outerbridge said: “I think the fact that so many MPs came out shows there’s a keen interest to get the course up and running again, so that it’s not a waste of good land.”
Once the remaining mowing and trimming is tackled, pesticide can be laid down to tackle the weeds.
“The next step is to get it to playing condition,” Ms Outerbridge said. “As far as it being an eyesore, we did a lot.”
Again, volunteers are asked to meet up at the former Oxford Laundry site, accessible via Khyber Pass from Rose Hill.
