Bermudian filmmakers seek cast for Portuguese short
Internationally acclaimed Bermudian filmmakers Kara Smith and Karli Powell have issued a casting call for their next local project.
The pair have skyrocketed into the film world over the past two years with their last short film, ‘Life Anonymous’, which premiered at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival, while Ms Smith captured the grand prize for the 2012 Hollywood Screenplay Contest for a screenplay she wrote, which was also shortlisted for an Emmy Award.
The duo have returned to Bermuda to begin work on their next short film, ‘Carlos and Pacheco’, set in Bermuda’s close knit Portuguese community and filmed entirely in the Portuguese language.
“We really wanted to tell a story that explored the diverse nature of Bermuda’s community,” said Ms Smith.
“It’s very interesting that we have such a significant and vibrant Portuguese culture here on the Island yet it’s a narrative that remains largely unexplored.
“We wanted to film in Portuguese because it adds a different context to the Bermudian experience — and hopefully evokes conversation about the varying cultures that contribute to the national identity.”
The film will be the first locally shot project for the two, who decided to challenge themselves by filming in Portuguese, and will tell the story of two best friends as they struggle to overcome a changing economy and financial hardships.
Auditions for the film will be held between noon and 5pm on Sunday, February 2 at the Vasco Da Gama Club on Reid Street.
Male and female actors from all backgrounds, between the ages of 18 and 45, are welcomed.
However, those hoping for a leading role will be required to speak Portuguese.
