One of Bermuda’s oldest residents, Clarice Reynolds Lindley, has died at the age of 104.

The accomplised violinist, who once met famed US composer George Gershwin, stayed active in later life and advised others of the benefits of doing so.

She played bridge twice a week, attended lectures held at the Bermuda College, did Tai-Chi to music and walked.

She also enjoyed swimming in the warmer months.

Her advice to young people was: “Keep studying. Education is so important. Do not give up school. Never stop learning.”

Mrs Lindley said: “Thoroughly enjoying life” was her greatest accomplishment.

She was born Clarice Reynolds, the daughter of Charles and Frances Reynolds in London, England on January 30, 1910. The family emigrated to Bermuda shortly afterwards and set up home in St George’s.

Clarice has a half brother, the late Keith Palmer, of whom she was very fond. At five years old she was sent to board at Mount St Agnes Academy as there was no appropriate school near them in St George’s. She went home on weekends in a horsedrawn bus.

When the First World War broke out Mr Reynolds enlisted in the Canadian military and the family moved to Canada.

They returned to Bermuda in 1921 and Mrs Lindley became a student at the Bermuda High School (BHS).

She was a talented violinist and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, performing with the orchestra. She played on the Early Radio Broadcast, Bermuda’s first radio station. As well as meeting composer Mr Gershwin, she once sat on stage with world-renowned violinist Fritz Kreisler.

On New Year’s Eve 1930 she married mariner Captain Ronald Lindley whose schooner Katherine May was Bermuda-based. The couple sailed to various ports for a time and then settled in Bermuda, opening a shoe store on Front Street.

In 2010, when Mrs Lindley turned 100, her former school BHS celebrated her life.

Mrs Lindley’s funeral is on Monday at 11am at Christ Church in Devonshire.
