Police to bridge gap in CCTV

Police will make up for the gap in the Island’s security camera coverage left by the implementation of a new CCTV system, according to National Security Minister Michael Dunkley.

Saying he was “very disappointed” by the delay in getting new cameras up and running, Mr Dunkley said he wished to “assure the community that this Government will not jeopardise the solid progress made in crime prevention and investigation by the police”.

A new system was to commence running on April 1 when the vendor BAS-Serco took over the security camera system from the previous operator, GET Security.

Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva last week ascribed the lag to technical hitches, which he called “a regrettable reality”.

In a statement issued last night, Mr Dunkley called the expansion of the network “an important and detailed project that provides an effective tool for law enforcement”.

“I have discussed the status of the project with the Commissioner today and recognise that the police will do what is necessary to supplement this gap in CCTV coverage,” Mr Dunkley said, adding that he supported “the Commissioner’s efforts to advance this project”.
