Using his loaf to provide bread for the needy
A Bermudian hotel worker used his own dough to fund a service that provides fresh bread for the needy.
Now he has bought two bread-making machines out of his own pocket and had another given to him to make fresh loaves for anyone who needs them.
McCal Roberts rose to the occasion after seeing families struggling to get by — and now he plans to expand his service to cover the entire Island.
Mr Roberts said he got the idea after doing voluntary work for Island charities Eliza DoLittle and the Salvation Army, both of which redistributes unsold bread donated by supermarkets.
Mr Roberts, who works at the Pompano Beach Club in Southampton, added: “We probably make three breads a day — that’s 18 loaves a week and demand outstrips supply.
“There is definitely a need for this. People are really suffering financially, families as well and they definitely need this.”
Mr Roberts has been baking and delivering bread for around two months.
And he said: “We are based at my home in Bailey’s Bay but we’d like to expand into St George’s and Somerset and maybe get a van.”
Mr Roberts said that bread donated by supermarkets was often not freshly baked and might not stay fresh for long.
He said: “It hurts me to know that people are getting bread that’s not really fresh. People need to eat healthily and we make totally fresh bread.”
Mr Roberts added that he could also offer a range of breads, including sugar- and gluten-free and in different types, like wholewheat, and can also provide cakes and rolls.
He said that people could fill in a form at local gas stations and he and his helpers would do their best to supply them with fresh loaves.
Mr Roberts added: “We deliver to their homes — we go by order forms and judging from those there are a lot of people out there who need this.
“We are working our way through the orders as fast as we can.”
