Bermuda’s sewage problems were highlighted again today with balls of raw sewage — called “greaseballs” by Government — washing ashore.

Residents first reported seeing the sewage on Grape Bay beach in Paget this morning.

“The Bermuda Government will notify the public if there is another situation of this nature in the future,” read a statement from a Department of Health spokeswoman on March 31.

As of 1.30pm no warning had been issued by Government.

One jogger who said she runs along Grape Bay beach every day, said the sewage balls were common.

“This happens more than two or three times,” said the woman, who asked not to be named.

“It’s more like ten times a year. To be frank, whenever you get these you normally get Portuguese man o’ war at the same time because there’s enough wind to push them over the reef.”

Strong easterly winds and swells have persisted since yesterday, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.

“South shore has been experiencing moderate to strong easterly winds up to around 20 knots since noon yesterday that have slowly veered to the southeast today,’ said meteorologist, Fred Byrley.
